Promoting Smart Labor Migration and Preventing Human Trafficking

Target areas: Siem Reap and Prey Veng provinces

This project aimed to respond to human trafficking issues at the community level by empowering youth to act as agents of change in preventing human trafficking, disseminating information on smart migration, raising community awareness about the threats of human trafficking, creating community human trafficking response teams, and mainstreaming human trafficking and smart migration in commune development planning. The project also built commune councilors\' capacity in supporting youth to play an active role in protecting their villagers and other youth from unsafe migration.

Using a participatory approach, KYA provided information on human trafficking to youth groups and duty bearers and then encouraged them to identify main problems and needs faced by the community and propose solutions. In return, youth groups and duty bearers contributed to disseminate safe migration prevention of human trafficking information in the community and led collective actions intended to stop illegal migration. Prevention of human trafficking and promotion smart migration was integrated as part of the commune development plan

KYA also established strong relations with provincial authorities and other NGO’s working in the same area to advocate for better job opportunities and better education.

Some activities include reflection workshops which brought together relevant stakeholders to discuss major safe migration-related challenges, awareness-raising activities where useful information on smart migration and prevention on human trafficking was provided to community people, public forums between youth, villagers with local authorities and relevant experts on migration and trafficking in persons; and working sessions with Commune Council to implementsystematic recording and monitoring of labour migration movements.

By the end of the project, youth groups and duty bearers were more collaborative and active in promoting safe migration in their communities. Knowledge on safe migration and prevention of human trafficking improved among the youth and acted smarter should they wished to migrate. Finally, commune councils were more responsive to labor migration issues, and promoted smart labor migration to their communities.
